Geithner calls for unified voice on Greece bailout (by Ronald D. Orol)
WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) - Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner on Tuesday called on European policymakers to speak with a unified voice about their efforts to stem an emergency in Greece. "It would be very helpful to have Europe speak with a clear, more unified voice and strategy," Geithner said at a Wall Street Journal CFO Network event in Washington. "It is very hard for people who invest in Europe to understand what that strategy is. The simple rule of crisis management is you want to have a simple, clear, unified, declarative strategy. That would be helpful. They [Europe] have a substantial financial arsenal and firewall that they've laid out and they want to make sure that is available to be deployed to do the kind of things to make this work." Following a Sunday night meeting in Luxembourg, European finance ministers said they won't decide on giving Greece 12 billion euros ($17 billion) of bailout funds until lawmakers in Athens agree to new spending cuts and economic reforms.
