Hi Lee,

The basic idea is that major changes in the ratio often reflect serious underlying problems in the credit markets, as well as in the risk trade, and can provide an advance warning. Bob Hoye has published some very useful articles/research on this relationship over the years so you could google him for a start. Here's a quick link to an article discussing the 'risk' side of the equation. Hope that helps a bit.
