Trading Journal Question

When you are doing your trading journal or keeping track of your performance, what do you define as a specific trade?

Say you are bullish and you buy one contract near resistance and then by another a bit lower and average in to your position and subsequently sell both later do you define that as one trade or two? I am inclined to call it one trade for performance evaluation purposes.

However, were I to instead sell one contract a few ticks higher on a scalp and then the other later I would call that two trades.

Your opinion is appreciated.
