Hell, I was working with a couple of my nephs on different occasions...much to my disbelief they could not read a ruler. Their dads are some of those that never did that kind of stuff and were either unable to read a ruler or failed to teach their boys how. I suspect they did not know themselves.

Maybe they don't teach that in school anymore.
