The politicians that espouse socialism, today, would NOT like communism. Engels envisioned a world, wherein communities all had similar housing. They shared communal meals ...everyone ate the same. They all worked an equal number of hours ....WHAT, NO WELFARE?
They all were to have the same pay. The same perquisites.
The closest thing, that I know of, similar to original communist ideas would be the Seven Amana Colonies. That was a religious community ... and it was WAY before Marx and Engel's manifesto. Of course, the colonies became quite capitalistic over time. However, it stayed communal until somewhere around WWII. But, it had its Christianity to hold it together ... something that Marx and Engels stood against.
