I just sat down, yesterday, with my CPA. The new tax law has benefited me. However, he told me something that I found quite disturbing. A W-2 employee can no longer expense mileage, or actual work related automobile expenses. There are many sales and service positions wherein the employee must furnish their own transportation AND there is no reimbursement. I know some people that are in advertising sales .. and similar fields, that put close to 50,000 legitimate business miles, per year, on their vehicle. No longer will the government allow them to write of said expenses.
But, here's the kicker ... the unfairness of the system ... If someone works for any government agency, municipal, county, state, or federal ... OR for a 501c3 nonprofit .... they still can.
So, if you work in the private sector ... you're SCREWED. But ..... government employees still get to keep that deduction.
The "swamp" rules and ..... what does that say about the president?
