No surprise...continuing above average temperatures south of a line drawn from NYC thru KY, central CO then down to extreme west Texas. Below normal temperatures along the Pacific coast north of San Francisico. Near-normal elsewhere.
This week will see unsettled and sometimes stormy conditions through the Great Lakes states and New York+New England as a strong jet stream runs west-to-east through the northern portion of the US, where it won't be hot but it will be muggy. The heat wave continues in the southern half of the country with little relief in store. For example, maximum high temperatures in Wichita Falls OK will exceed 105F all week, extending their streak of consecutive 100+ days to 47 by Saturday. North of the heat wave ridge in the central plains, large thunderstorm complexes will routinely develop bringing localized flooding and damaging winds, at times.
The tropics look to be quiet for the most part. There are several small disturbances in the tropical altantic heading west from Africa toward the Carribean this week but the reliable models don't develop them...yet. From this point through mid-September the probability of tropical storms increases sharply.
