Trichet vigorously defends ECB's track record (by Polya Lesova)
LONDON (MarketWatch) -- European Central Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet launched into a vigorous defence of the ECB's track record in delivering price stability on Thursday in response to a reporter's question at a press conference in Frankfurt. "We were called to deliver price stability. We were called by all the democracies of Europe. We have delivered price stability...impeccably," Trichet said, his voice displaying noticeable emotion during what's his second-to-last press conference as ECB president. "The situation is difficult," he added. "We have taken all our decisions in full independence. They are heavy those responsibilities, very heavy. We expect all other authorities to be up to their own responsibility and we know it's not easy in the current circumstances. We have full respect for the difficulty of the time."
