46 million in poverty in 2011: Census (by Ruth Mantell)
WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- There were 46.2 million people in poverty in 2011, down slightly from 46.3 million in 2010, the U.S. Census Bureau reported Wednesday. The poverty rate ticked down to 15% from 15.1%. Neither result is statistically different from the prior year, Census said. Meanwhile, real median household income decreased 1.5% to about $50,054. Those without health insurance decreased to 48.6 million in 2011 from 50 million in 2010.
