SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Oil futures fell Monday to settle below $86 a barrel as refinery shutdowns ahead of Hurricane Sandy's landfall on the East Coast spurred worries over demand for crude and supplies of petroleum products. December crude (clz2) fell 74 cents, or 0.9%, to settle at $85.54 a barrel. Floor trading was closed in New York Monday, but energy futures traded on the electronic platform and prices settled at their usual times. November gasoline (rbx2) tacked on 6 cents, or 2.1%, to settle at $2.76 a gallon and November heating oil (hox2) settled at $3.12 a gallon, up 2 cents, or 0.6%. November natural gas (ngx12) , which expired at settlement, rose 7 cents, or 2.1%, to $3.47 per million British thermal units.
