If it wasn't obvious for people in the NE, winter's not over yet. For the latter half of February colder than average conditions are expected over New England and the Great-Lakes states, with more-or-less average temperatures over the rest of the lower 48.
This week the active weather continues. Blizzard conditions are underway over much of the northern plains and will spread in earnest into the upper Midwest tonight as a deep low over Nebraska today moves to the northeast to lie north of Quebec City by Tuesday morning. Cold air behind the low will push off the NE Atlantic seaboard then, and the trailing portion of the cold front will slump SW then stall through the center of the Gulf Coast states. Along the Central gulf coast, the approach of the front today brings the risk of severe weather including the chance of a few tornadoes. Not much of a warm up is expected tomorrow and Tuesday over the NE as the snow cover will act to keep any brief temperature recover suppressed. Over upstate NY and through New England the approach of the front will bring a wintery mix with a risk of freezing rain.
Through the remainder of the week temperatures will stabilize with seasonal winter conditions over the northeastern quadrant of the mainland. Milder drier conditions will return to the desert SW and California. Thursday morning a new push of arctic air will plunge through the northern plains, overspreading the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley by Friday, and across the NE Atlantic seaboard early Saturday morning, bringing another shot of snow to NYC and Boston on the weekend (although nothing like this weekend's event). By Saturday morning well below average temperatures will cover the lower 48 east of the Rockies.
