Your broker is mostly wrong, or just old. In guessing the latter.

I used to give minimal consideration to margins, after missing the pfg bust by the skin of of my teeth, I stay minimum.

Brokers who charge max margin for spreads and short options are just letting the fcm camp on their money.

I would not do business with a broker who doesn't honor span margin and exchange recognized spread margins.
