I see it as a relentless thief which has no morality or sense of right and wrong. It just wants to mindlessly eat, never satisfied. Not due to hunger, but rather as its defined purpose for living.

Some might say it is inside. not outside. If it is innate to all, I suspect it can't be slain permanently. It is a component of living beings. Controlling it would be the quest.
