Doc, If I understand the question, I always base the % gain/loss on the total of the acct. (I'm comfortable risking around 1% per trade -- never more than 2%). You don't have to keep all the money w/ the broker either -- nothing wrong w/ just enuf for margin.

It;s like anything else associated w/ risk, it's up to you.
