Wayne; You did all that you should have done.

When we see a person or other critter in dire need we should rush in and render assistance. If you saw a real need you wouldn't have had time for all those other thoughts, you would have reacted.
You did not see anyone in need so why go looking for someone to help that may or may not be there or need your help.
It could have been you lying alone face down in the mud trying to help someone that wasn't there. Now go ask you wife if she thinks a $300 pair of boots on the mantel is what she would like to remember you by.

Time to let go of could have should have and look at the whole picture. Next time put on your old boots.
