Back in the 1980's an engineer at Total Petroleum told me that by putting a redesigned section in their cracker they could get out about 28% more product then they put in. I didn't disagree with him but I never ,to this day, could get a firm grip on it.
They refurbished the old Hess refinery in Ardmore OK. It took 42 days to put it together. All done except for a 20ft section of circular ladder.
They cranked it up and it took just about 42 minutes to burn it down.
The refinery in Ark City KS worked the way it was designed to work.
I always thought the time to rebuild, the time to burn down were some sort of an omen considering the capacity of a barrel.
I still don't know how many gallons they can get out of a barrel but I would like to know.
