If you file, married filing singly, and you both have an income .. that's a very costly endeavor. If you were both single .. assuming you to be of above average income, consider divorce and filing as single. If children are involved .. it's even better. One of you could file as single, head of household.
As far as health insurance goes .. the only way that you can "save" money .. is to have a low income and take the welfare "subsidy" prepaid credit.
I doubt if you would qualify. However, if you do .. may as well get what you can .. when there is NO underwriting and your rates are the same as some morbidly obese heart attack waiting to happen slob.
My CPA runs our returns a million ways to Sunday .. oftentimes to avoid the AMT. He's a semi-retired CPA of African descent .. and he's the best tax man that I have ever encountered. We have been using him for close to two decades.
Your accountant, or attorney-at-law of that's what you use, should do the same for you.
