I wrote about these free climbers a few days ago...we have a contender. They even sent a photographer to document his eventual death. Alex Honnold...future splot at the bottom of the cliff.
"The impressive 3,000-ft vertical ascent will be featured on film and in the magazine.
National Geographic on Saturday documented the first ever free solo climb of Yosemite’s 3,000-ft El Capitan peak.
Professional rock climber Alex Honnold completed his 3,000-ft vertical ascent in slightly fewer than four hours, according to Nat Geo.
The 31-year-old's impressive climb was photographed and taped by National Geographic photographer Jimmy Chin and award-winning documentary filmmaker E. Chai Vasarhelyi. Honnold, who completed the climb without using ropes or other safety gear, will be featured in an upcoming Nat Geo doc and magazine piece.
Here's the description from Nat Geo: "The documentary promises an intimate, unflinching portrait of the free soloist as he prepares to and then achieves his lifelong dream: to climb the face of the world’s most famous rock … without a rope."
The doc is scheduled to premiere in theaters, followed by a global broadcast release on National Geographic channels. No release date has been set yet.
The project's producers Vasarhelyi, Chin, Shannon Dill, Evan Hayes, Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald."'
