what generally happens is the higher earning spouse initiates the divorce. Generally, that person is not the nurturer in the family. The nurturer then sacrifices everything to make up the difference. This results in lower earnings and therefore lower Social Security when they retire...while the leaving spouse gets to get full SSI in the end as the nurturing was left to another.
