It's mathmatics. Trump's tariffs will result in less world trade, which will result in slow economic (or, worse, negative) activity. Tariffs cause depressions, not recessions. The consumer is forced to pay higher costs (taxes) and has, therefore, less disposable income to fund the rest of the economy.
