This ain't exactly recent. When "Red Dawn" was remade (released in 2012), originally it had the PRC as the invaders. However, backlash caused the script to be re-written, making the North Koreans the villains.

What's the population of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea? It's well under twenty-six million. If every man, woman, and child invaded ... what would be the result?

The PRC, on the other hand, could readily invade with a force well over the United State's entire population and leave around one billion at home.

Yup, caving to the Chinese didn't just start.
