If this were the end, Mr Trump would be right to say, as he suggested on 8 January that his strike had worked. It would really be worthwhile to sweep away a world of baleful people and force Iran to curb their aggression. This may indeed be the way things will work in the coming months. The problem is no one can count on it, including Mr Trump.
But Iran is certainly not slacked by its thirst for vengeance. The Revolutionary Guards, even when preventing outright forms of aggression, will likely pursue other approaches such as cyber attacks, suicide bombings by proxies, assassinations of American officials and a variety of instruments they have developed over the years (see Briefing).
