"Being an American is a way of life. Just being a resident of this country does not make anyone an American."

Ideological/philosophical vs geographic American...is what I call it.

Some live here but do not hold to the ideals of America. They are Americans simple because they happen to be in this geographic area defined as America.

Ideological/philosophical Americans can believe in the American ideal but don't necessarily even have to be here to be considered American. Technically they have to be here but there are millions from around the globe who want to be here and participate in America.
