I believe that's where the movie...Terminator was going with the battle between humans and bots. The machines had taken over and were trying to rid earth of humans so the humans couldn't turn the off and end them.

Ultimately the humans won here but what if they hadn't and only the machines were left, self sufficient and obviously more advanced including time travel.

what would they do next? Explore space, run into another organic civilization take it over.
