" Can't see the pepper plants behind the tomato"

I don't know why, but every time I plant peppers near tomatoes the peppers are bitter tasting.
I was told by the guy at the greenhouse that the acid in the tomatoes does that to the sweet bell peppers.
Have you noticed any of that? I put peppers on one end of my patch and tomatoes at the other. It seams to work for me.
