With a credit card, it has been federal law ... since the eighties, that you are only liable for fifty dollars, per card, up to the point that you report it lost or stolen or hijacked. Once it has been reported, you are not liable for a dime. Most cc companies eat everything, but ... just in case they don't, you have the law behind you.
On banking transactions, someone passing a forged check, drafting your account, or using the debit card without authorization ... most banks eat it. But there is no law that protects you from fraudulent transactions. So, say ... someone pops your account for a hunnert thousand dollars .... from a standpoint of legal protection ... no law protects you.
I do no online banking and have no debit cards ... just in case.
Credit cards work just fine.
