why would he have been flagged. At first everyone was saying he was dishonorable charged which would have made it illegal for him to own a weapon or even have one available owned by another person in the household(is my understanding, anyway). But now they are saying he wasn't dishonorably discharged but let go with a lesser charge. Who knows for sure as you say...it's the news.

Anyway, the law never stops the criminal from, in one way or the other, acquiring a gun. They'll get one via some other method.

The best defense against the nut case is a good guy/guys(male or female) with a gun. That's why I say to all who attend church...take your weapon...if your church doesn't have paid security and will not allow concealed carry...go to another church!
