The odd-even system was used in the early 70s, too. Once I was in line and the attendent walked about a block away to the car waiing in front of me and put a sign on the trunk that said "Last car for gas." So, I waited until he had walked back to the station and got out of my car and took trhe sign off the guy in front of me and put it on my own trunk. The guy behind me did the same...on and on. Got gas and all was well that day.
